The ECA would like to congratulate its Chair & CEO Bernard Godding on being awarded an MBE.

The New Year Honours List recognises outstanding achievement and service across the United Kingdom with the majority of awards given to local heroes who have made a difference in their communities.

Bernard was made an MBE in recognition of his voluntary service to adult learning and the Educational Centres Association. Following a long career in education, including 19 years working as Norfolk County Council’s Head of Adult Education for Central Norfolk, Bernard became Chair of the Association over 10 years ago.

Speaking of his MBE he said:

“Helping other people to learn has always interested me. Seeing where they get stuck and suggesting ways of approaching the issue has been continually engaging.

Since I was a boy I've has some great mentors; people I owe a great deal to myself and I hope in my work with adults with disabilities, in the fields of literacy and numeracy and more widely I've been able to make a difference.

None of my achievements would have been possible without the tremendous teams I've worked in and the enormous dedication of very talented people. Of course I include my wife and daugher in this; their encouragement and inspiration has been with me every step of the way.”

His wife Naomi, who is treasurer of ECA, will be accompanying him when he becomes an MBE.

The ECA staff are delighted to see that Bernard’s commitment and hard work have been officially recognised.
