Leading the way on Informal Adult Learning

National Advisory Forum Representation

The longstanding role of the ECA in the Community Sector Coalition has been recognised by its nomination to represent the community sector at the Informal Adult Learning National Advisory Forum.

The Forum was established by the Learning Revolution White Paper which was published in March 2009.

ECA Chairman Bernard Godding will attend the meeting which takes place on the 24th November and is to be chaired by Kevin Brennan, Minister for Further Education, Skills, Apprenticeships and Consumer Affairs at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Other members of the Forum include representatives of Government departments, national adult learning organisations and non departmental public bodies.

This meeting of key stakeholders will advise and steer the strategy’s future development. It will act as a sounding board for ministers, a place in which to communicate issues and concerns to ministers as well as identifying new opportunities for connection, transformation and investment.

Bernard’s role as a high level champion in his ‘own sphere of influence is designed to update the third sector constituency and secure wider stakeholder input’.

Bernard feels that “The community sector has exactly the reach that the Government are looking for with respect to informal adult learning” and he hopes he will “be able to reflect the richness and diversity of the sector which of course the minister knows well from his time in the Office of the Third Sector”.
