The potential for community action at the grassroots
The Community Sector Coalition (CSC), of which the ECA is a founding member, have released a Policy Paper ‘Unseen, Unequal, Untapped, Unleashed - the potential for community action at the grassroots’
At a time of massive cuts ‘community resilience’ is what will determine how well local people will survive. When there is no public sector money, when business retreats, all that is left is the collective action of local people. The Coalition believes the scale of community action is not really recognised and understood. Community groups are often overlooked and ignored by government third sector policy. The challenge for government is to help communities to help themselves – supporting not stifling grassroots community action.
Community Sector Coalition would like to see:
- investment in grassroots funding
- a community building in every neighbourhood
- community development support
- facilitated local forums
- learning for citizenship
Learning for citizenship has always been important to the ECA whose work in projects such as TEACh have promoted and supported this learning.
Matthew Scott, CSC Director says “It’s of vital importance that the community sector is seen for what it is – or more importantly what it can be.â€
